What do you
think of when you hear about South America? Perhaps our first thought is the
Amazon rain forests and then the 2016 summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. But,
there is much more to South America and their grasslands are an important part
of the economy and have a colorful and diverse history. The grasslands in
Argentina are known as the pampas and were the home of the “gauchos”. The
gauchos were the Argentinean equivalent of the North American cowboys. The
grasslands of Argentina are just about as far south of the equator as North
Dakota is north of the equator and extend from the Andes Mountains on the west
to the Atlantic Ocean on the east. Their history is every bit as colorful and
exciting as the American west.
Come and listen to Dr. Horacio Petruzzi from the National Institute of Agricultural Technology talk about the grasslands of Argentina. The National Institute in Argentina is the equivalent of our Agricultural Research Service in the United States.
Dr. Petruzzi will stay as long as we like to answer questions about Argentina and its grasslands. Bring a lunch and come at noon and stay as long as you like.
